Startups in Nigeria raised over $254 million in the first half of 2026, marking the country’s strongest funding performance since the second half of 2022. This recovery follows a challenging 2025, when Nigeria led Africa’s biggest startup markets in deal volume but secured the smallest share of total funding among the Big Four. From funding trends and startup grants to crowdfunding regulations and emerging sectors, here’s what founders and investors need to know about Nigeria’s startup ecosystem in 2026.

How Many Startups Are There in Nigeria?

What Counts as a Startup

A startup is simply an early stage business built on a new model, which is basically seeking growth for capital, this definition sits between a basic company registry and a list of established large companies.

Why the Numbers Don’t Align

An exact number of Nigerian startups is quite impossible to estimate, any article or publication claiming any figure is just extracting from one database without context or verifiable source. Numbers vary depending on whether registered companies or active traders are counted. This simply discourages anyone looking for a list or stats on Nigerian startups count. Fintech remains the most tracked sector. The 2025 Nigeria Fintech Map counted 430 fintech companies in February 2025, a jump from 255 in January 2024, as reported by Fintech News Africa.

How Much Funding Nigerian Startups Raise

The 2025 Slowdown

Nigeria is regarded as one of Africa’s biggest startup markets, but in 2025 funding share, it ranked in last place, Nigerian startups pulled roughly $304 million, just a measly 8% of Africa’s $3.8 billion. South Africa led with 32%, Kenya 29%, and Egypt 15%. Nigeria had its weakest share since 2019. Yet, Nigeria still achieved a lot by closing the most deals, meaning lots of small checks, not huge ones. In 2024, funding hit about $410 million.

The 2026 Recovery

The first half of 2026 narrates a different story. Nigerian startups raised $254 million which also includes debt or $214 million in pure equity, per Africa: The Big Deal. Nigeria came first for equity funding in Africa and logged its best half-year since the second half of 2022. Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa combined took 58% of all African funding. Just remember: 2025 and the first half of 2026 data come from different reports with also different rules. Let’s view them as different periods.

Where Startup Funding in Nigeria Comes From

Grants Nigerian Founders Can Apply For

Tony Elumelu Foundation Startup in Nigeria

Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme is the most recognised grant source, it gives out over $5,000 in non-refundable capital to founders across all 54 African countries and has successfully helped over 24,000 entrepreneurs since 2015, it runs yearly and this year round opened on January 1st and closed March 1st, 2026. If you come across a list of Nigerian startup grants without dates be careful because an out of date grant is useless.

How Crowdfunding Is Regulated

Crowdfunding platforms for startups in Nigeria operate under the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), every single offer needs the commission pre-clearance before launching. Portals must have at least ₦100 million in paid-up capital, annual caps depend on company size: ₦50 million for micro, ₦70 million for small and ₦100 million for medium firms. Retail investors can’t put in more than 10% of their net annual income, which falls under the Investments and Securities Act 2025, signed March 29th, 2025 which replaced the 2007 Act.

What the Startup Act Provides

The Nigeria Startup Act signed on October 19th, 2022 offers over 31 incentives across six categories plus a Startup Investment Seed Fund. Approximately 15 government agencies handle implementation, do well to check the portal for current labeling rules before banking on any single incentive.

Which Sectors Nigerian Startups Work In

Fintech Leads by a Wide Margin

Fintech is very dominant in this part of the continent and it is also the best-tracked tech niche in the country. Nigeria had 430 fintech startups in Nigeria as of February 2025, That’s a massive surge from 255 in January 2024, a 70% spike in 13months. The Central Bank of Nigeria CBN made a major regulatory move in January 2026, making companies like Flutterwave, Paga, OPay, Moniepoint, Kuda, and PalmPay as systemically relevant, now they face a ₦5 billion minimum capital requirement which signals fintech’s shift from a growth phase to a strictly supervised industry.

What Is Growing Next

Beyond payments, AI, agricultural tech, health tech, and educational tech are gaining traction, there are no verified counts exist for these, so any AI startup figures for Nigeria are estimates, not raw data. Financial services still dominate the entire landscape which means the incoming wave will be measured by whether it can raise funds outside that major category.

Nigeria’s Most Successful Startups

The Five That Reached a Billion Dollars

Five Nigerian startups hit billion dollar valuations: Flutterwave, OPay, Moniepoint, Interswitch, and Andela. Moniepoint was the latest on October 29th 2024, there were no new unicorns that emerged in 2026. These five are the usual companies that always top any “best Nigerian startups” list. the only agreed metric (a billion-dollar valuation), they are the most successful but five names don’t reveal where the market is going.

The Builders Behind the Next List

The real question is who’s next in line. Young and vibrant Nigerian builders like Darlyton Ovwighosuotu and early stage startups too small for funding reports are writing that story right now. Droidvilla Spotlight 2026  is our way of finding and covering these Nigerian startups before a valuation makes them obvious.
