The Walking Dead Series Finale: The Beginning And The Finale Synopsis
It has been a beautiful twelve years run for the Walking dead since release in 31st October 2010 till 20th November 2022, and it’s no joke or exaggeration when they say goodbyes are the hardest. For die hard fans that have stuck to the show for the twelve years, even binge watching entire seasons to fill for the time spent before a new season was released.
I must say personally, the walking dead is the best apocalyptic television series to have ever graced our television screens, riding the wave for over a decade of different apocalyptic series released during its reign and it still stood firm holding his crown while standing out in its uniqueness as the best.
The Walking Dead is an American post-apocalyptic horror television series based on the comic book series of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard—together forming the core of The Walking Dead franchise.

The series features a large ensemble cast as survivors of a zombie apocalypse trying to stay alive under near-constant threat of attacks from zombies known as “walkers” (among other nicknames).
With the collapse of modern civilization, these survivors must confront other human survivors who have formed groups and communities with their own sets of laws and morals, sometimes leading to open, hostile conflict between them.
After more than a decade of brutal deaths, undead action, and post-apocalyptic drama, this is how AMC’s The Walking Dead series finale breaks down. Though the zombie apocalypse promises to “Rest In Peace,” The Walking Dead’s series finale proves neither peaceful, nor rested.
In this final episode of the walking dead we say goodbye to the show but the characters stay as part of us. We have lost so many of them and even in this final episode with the strongest and smartest horde of walkers they’ve ever faced we even got to lose more of our faves, but they sure didn’t go down without a fight.
With Rick Grimes until his departure in the ninth season leaving the fans hungry for his return to our screens almost as much as fans have wanted the return of Henry Cavil as the superman in the DCU.
After the final battle to save the common wealth, The Walking Dead concludes with a time jump, leaping one year ahead from Pamela Milton’s arrest and the Commonwealth estate fireball.
Ezekiel has been appointed the Commonwealth’s new Governor. Not only does this pay off Khary Payton’s rousing speech ahead of The Walking Dead series finale’s closing battle, it marks the completion of Ezekiel’s character arc after he refused to become a leader again following the Kingdom’s collapse.
The now-Lieutenant Mercer is Ezekiel’s right-hand man, while Carol operates in the “Lance Hornsby” role of Director of Operations. Eugene and Max remain a heartwarming couple and have a child named Rosie – after Rosita, of course – and although Eugene was spotted rescuing kids from the Commonwealth children’s home, this youngster seems to be his biological daughter.
Romance is rife, with Yumiko and Magna, Mercer and Princess, and Lydia and Elijah all still together, but one long-teased coupling has sadly not come to pass.
The Walking Dead’s final scene between Daryl Dixon and Connie shows a flirtatious, friendly bond, but no indication of an official relationship. Connie’s “how’s the frontier?” line implies this lack of romance is down to Daryl being a nomad and not settling in one community.
Aaron, Jerry and Gabriel all reside in Alexandria, with the latter taking custody of Coco following Rosita’s death. Negan’s present to Judith implies he, Annie and their new child also live at Hilltop, or at least close enough to bring gifts.
The compass itself is a callback to The Walking Dead season 9, in which Negan stole Judith’s compass during his prison escape before later offering to return it. Suspecting Negan needed help finding his way, Judith allowed him to keep it. Finally handing the compass back indicates Negan has now settled on his new direction.
Maggie is the leader of a rebuilt Hilltop community that, like Alexandria, has made significant advancements in construction during the time jump, but Oceanside’s status is largely ignored by The Walking Dead’s series finale.
Luke and Jules previously revealed the sandy community had been attacked by the Commonwealth, but the location’s only mention comes from Eugene, who looks forward to Coco swimming there. This line could potentially confirm Oceanside remains active when The Walking Dead ends.
The Walking Dead easily could have ended its epic 11-season, record-breaking run with Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) riding off into the distance on his motorcycle. And for a minute there, as the screen faded to black, it appeared it would. And then a match was lit literally.
The series finale took a dramatic turn in its final few minutes, looking both ahead and back as viewers saw the return of Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes and Danai Gurira’s Michonne; who will be returning for a 2023 spin-off series on AMC.
While the duo were in separate places, and it would seem separate times, they were connected through images of campfires and the sounds of their voices reciting words they were each writing in a journal. The same journal, it turns out.
That’s because as we saw Rick (shoeless and wearing jeans and a Civic Republic Military jacket) in one scene put his boots, journal, and phone in a bag and then toss it on a boat to avoid it being confiscated by an approaching CRM helicopter, we also saw Michonne with that very same bag, journal, boots and phone in another the clues that have led her on her journey to find her lost husband.
“I think of the dead all the time,” Rick wrote in his letter as the faces of friends both living and dead— shout out to T-Dog! — flashed across the screen. “And about the living. Who I lost. I think about them all every day. Their faces. What I learned from them. How they made me who I am. So much more than all of this made me who I am.”
Michonne then sprung into action, sporting a fancy new samurai-like suit and slicing the head off one walker while galloping by on horseback, as Rick was approached by a helicopter informing him that “you’ve been located and are instructed to surrender. Remain in place with your hands up,” and then adding, “C’mon Rick. It’s like she told you. There’s no escape for the living.”
As much as the long-awaited The Walking Dead series finale brings stories to close, a slew of new chapters are laid open for the future. “Rest In Peace” not only paves the way for Daryl Dixon, The Walking Dead: Dead City, and the Rick Grimes and Michonne spinoffs, but also makes major mythology swings that will inevitably have massive repercussions across all three projects. The Walking Dead may be over, but “Rest In Peace” becomes a somewhat misleading title by the time credits are rolling. Here is how The Walking Dead ends, and how The Walking Dead’s future begins.
The walking dead universe is birthed and we’ll be having multiple articles over time throwing more light and connecting the dots of the already existing spin-offs and the ones yet to come. All we can say is that, it’s been a solid run so far and we’re just glad that its only just getting started.
The arrival of variant zombies in The Walking Dead has sparked questions for the main group, completely altering how they perceive the undead threat. Moreover, the rapidly-increasing prevalence of variants among the zombie population suggests this new type of walker will only grow in number.
Variants play a relatively small role throughout “Rest In Peace,” and many mysteries remain unsolved regarding their presence. That can only mean Daryl, Rick, Michonne, Maggie and Negan will be forced to tackle the climbing dead, the intelligent dead, and the running dead when The Walking Dead continues.
