On July 2019, millions of MTN subscribers were requested do a re-register of their SIM cards to avoid being blocked from the network.
This was initially said to be an update but seems to be obvious that subscribers go through a fresh registration process. From a member who already did her re-registration, she said ” It wasn’t easy, as much crowd was present, I got it registered again in less than an hour”. Others who are yet to do theirs are advised to do so before the end of the month (August) to avoid being blocked from the network.
According to a News report, an official of MTN claims that the fresh registration is as a result of a directive from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). MTN has already sent thousands of free airtime to customers who registers their sim.
Its advisable to go along with a valid Photo ID as well.
This process isn’t just about MTN alone, we can remember past years how Airtel subscribers were all asked also re register their sims to avoid disconnection from its service.
We anticipate for 9mobile and Globacom to ask their subscribers to re-register their sims very soon.
This obviously an effort of avoiding the incident that happened in the year 2015 which lead to the fine of $5.2 billion by the NCC for failing to deactivate as many as 5 million unregistered SIM cards in 2015.
