While it’s convenient to have a fingerprint scanner on our smartphones instead of inputting a passcode or pattern, it can also sometimes be annoying when you can’t easily reach the space where it’s located.
That is the reason why this new patent that Xiaomi has gotten would be very much appreciated when it finally makes it to consumers.
The patent is for an all-screen fingerprint scanner and is finally a change for the under-screen fingerprint scanner that we’ve been using for some years now. This new tech will allow any part of the screen of upcoming smartphones be used as a fingerprint sensor.
There are some specific areas on the screen that function as fingerprint sensors currently, and users sometimes find it difficult placing their fingers specifically in that area which causes multiple tries and sometimes results in the devices getting locked.
Xiaomi has shown that an array of infrared LED light transmitters under the touch-screen layer and above the AMOLED display will be used.
More About Xiaomi Fingerprint Scanner Approval
The receivers will be placed above the transmitters and they are the “core building blocks” that makes the entire screen of future smartphones a fingerprint scanner.
When the screen is been touched with the finger, the touch screen will register the touch, position, and shape of the fingertip.
The transmitters will emit light out of the screen at the shape and position of the fingertip and then it will be reflected back. This captured data will map out the contour of the fingertip and compare it to your already saved fingerprint details for verification.
However, we do not know how they will deal with accidental unlocks yet, that is, when you touch the screen mistakenly but we see that to be an issue that will most likely have a solution.

As amazing as this sounds, I hope the screen would equally strong because, once it breaks, if the screen ain’t that tough, this feature might ceased to work. I’ll rather prefer having the fingerprints by the side than on-screen.
