Facebook To Implement End-to-End Encryption Come 2022.

For those that loves Facebook Messenger, here is an unfortunate news. Facebook Messenger messages won’t be encrypted by default until 2022, at least. This also affects Instagram chats as well. Neither will have encryption by default anytime soon.

Nevertheless, there’s a possibility of enabling end-to-end encryption for Facebook Messenger. The ability to do so has been around since 2016. Users have to switch over to a “Secret Conversation” mode in order to do so. End-to-end encryption does not work for Instagram chats.

This may not matter to some people. But, for users who have become more conscious about what social media companies can see, this can be a letdown.

Facebook updated its safety and security plans and announced these updates in a blog. The main part about end-to-end encryption mentions the 2022 timeline, though,  there was some other information on the blog.

Facebook began the plan to implement end-to-end encryption across all of its messaging platforms back in 2019.

Users may be okay with waiting since 2022 is not that far away. This is one thing that a company like Facebook could easily implement. For the company to show its commitment to privacy, making messages encrypted by default could be one of the easiest ways.

By doing so, Facebook users wouldn’t be tempted to switch since they offer a feature that competitors offer. We hope the company decide to speed up its end-to-end encryption plans. Only time will tell.
