The Meta-owned messaging app, WhatsApp is now enabling a new privacy measure that will make it easier for users to keep prying eyes from their status.
It will no longer display your Last seen status to unknown contacts by default. It’s been noticed that some users are already not seeing the last seen status of some contacts and business accounts.
This is clearly because of some improvements that WhatsApp is making “to improve the privacy and security of our users”.
Basically, if you don’t know the person or you haven’t chatted with them before, you won’t be able to see their last seen and their online presence.
More About The New WhatsApp Update
Before now, you had to change your settings manually to “My contacts” if you only wanted your statuses to be seen by your contacts.
Currently, it is turned on by default so everyone can be protected. Only those you know or add to your contact lists will see your last seen or online status.
One of the reasons this change was introduced is that there are third-party apps that can show the last seen and online status of contacts.
The apps are used by some people to stalk others, even though it’s the only information they are able to get. But with this new setting, these apps won’t be able to see the status since they don’t have an active chat with the user.
Hopefully, this will put an end to that. You don’t have to do anything to activate this feature though. You’ll just have to wait for your settings to change automatically to this privacy measure.
